Upper Atmospheric NO from SCHIAMACHY: Simulations and Instrument Capabilities

چکیده

The SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric ChartograpHY (SCIAMACHY) operates in eight channels covering the UV, the visible and two infrared regions. Recent developments in the testing of the instrument now enable not only the full use of channel 1 (240 nm-314 nm) at a required high level of performance but also its extension to 220 nm. This instrumental improvement allows new objectives to be addressed in the upper stratosphere, in addition to the already proposed mesospheric and thermospheric investigations of nitric oxide. Simulations will show the instrument capabilities for these studies and will be compared with the latest instrument test data obtained before instrument delivery. The operation modes corresponding to these NO observations will also be described. The capabilities of SCIAMACHY for mapping the total column of upper atmospheric NO will be investigated as well as possibilities to infer NO vertical distribution and transfer properties between the different atmospheric regions. .

Design of and initial results from a highly instrumented reactor for atmospheric chemistry (HIRAC)

The design of a Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry (HIRAC) is described and initial results obtained from HIRAC are presented. The ability of HIRAC to perform in-situ laser-induced fluorescence detection of OH and HO2 radicals with the Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) technique establishes it as internationally unique for a chamber of its size and pressure/temperatu...

CO2 retrievals from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder: Methodology and validation

[2] Although it was designed for high resolution/accurate temperature and moisture profiles, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Earth-Observing System (NASAEOS) Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) is capable of measuring variations in carbon trace gases such as CO2 [Chédin et al., 2003; Crevoisier et al., 2003; Engelen and Stephens, 2004; Aumann et al., 2005]. This capability cou...

Comparison Of Atmospheric Density Models in the Thermospheric Region: MSIS-86 and DTM-78

The German Satellite CHAMP (Challenging Minisatellite Payload) has the unique ability to measure the surface forces present. The total density can be easily derived from this measurement, with the help of models of solar radiation pressure and Earth’s albedo. This total density will be compared with the total density from two models, MSIS-86 (Hedin, 1987) and DTM-78 (Barlier et al., 1977). The ...
